The question
How Banana Ball is each team actually playing?
Ph² counts five things that only happen in Banana Ball and never show up in a regular baseball box score. A higher score means a team plays more of the Banana Ball game; a lower score means it plays closer to regular baseball.
The recipe
| Ingredient | What it counts | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Trick plays | Trick play outs, minus a quarter point for each trick play miss | 50 |
| B4S | Ball-four sprints | 25 |
| WO | Walk-off innings | 15 |
| GBAT | Golden Batter appearances | 5 |
| SB1B | Steals of first base | 5 |
| Total | 100 | |
How a score is figured
Each ingredient is counted per game. The league leader in that ingredient gets its full weight, and every other team gets a share in proportion. Example: the Firefighters had 1.393 walk-offs per game; the league leaders had 1.410.
1.393 ÷ 1.410 × 15 = 14.83 points
Where the weights came from
The weights balance two things: how often each play actually happens, and how much the City Webmaster believes each play should count. Weighting by frequency alone would have put more than 60 percent of the score on trick plays. The final set gives walk-offs and steals of first about three times what frequency alone would. The weights are locked for the season.
